Photography – Sometimes The Basics Are Better

Though I mostly like to play with digital manipulation, it can be a good idea to experiment with other forms of photography as well as have a focus. I often take random (or not so random) pictures with whichever camera I have available, usually of food (the lastest meal or desert) or of flowers, a cool sky, or a neat scene while I’m taking a trip. Though these are often taken on-the-spot, the will most likely turn into a texture or become an object of a digital manipulation. These are a few pictures I recently took that I only did Lightroom edits to. The idea is to practice looking for the elements of a good photograph- which translates into the elements of a good digitally manipulated photograph. Some of the pictures in this set (more on Flickr) are from the Legends Mall in Kansas City, Kansas.

Creative Photography – Texturing

This is a set of photography I decided to do based on playing with texturing and combining multiples photos rather than being based on the Another Day series. I used Photoshop CS4 and Bridge for these. My fiance posed as the model in some of them.

The Disection of a Tea Can

This was a set I originally shot for Editorial class, but didn’t quite fit the assignment. It was spawned by the quote that surrealism is “a soda can and an umbrella on a disection table” (unfortuanetly I don’t remember who said it). Regardless, I had fun with this one. Shot with two profoto lights. Some of the shots were shot with a lensbaby lens.

Lensbaby and Photoshoot

Last night, after hearing about the lensbaby lens for the first time, I decided to check it out from UCM’s handy photo checkout lab. I attempted to play with it last night, though I discovered that it was hard to get to work well in low light without a flash. (Later I discovered there is a way to change aperture, but not until right before I had to turn it back in to checkout). Then this morning, the weather felt like Spring. I took about a half hour before class to shoot pictures around campus, then during Creative Photography we ended up doing a little more shooting.

Anyhow, I thought I’d share a few of my favorites. Some have photoshop editing, but most only have the Bridge basic techniques. (Including one where I’ve come to be fond of raising saturation instead of lowering it.)

You can see more of today’s shoot on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/41674422@N08/sets/72157623127017697/show/

New Lights and New Work on Flickr

For Christmas I got a nice Alien Bee light set, two B400 lights, a set of four grids, two umbrellas, a hotshoe, and two lightstands. Today I’ve added the Flickr feed to the blog, so you’ll be able to see my most recent photos. I’ll add more photos later, including ones I took for a family during January.

EDIT: These are some of the family photos I took over Christmas Break.

Retouching Practice

I did a little more work on the blog itself, adding an avatar and changing the header.

In the meantime, my dad found a photo of me and my cousin that he had wanted to have retouched for a while. Since we were just working on retouching in Digital Imaging, I decided to give it a try. Yay for the power of Photoshop:
